Email pack rats

I sat down at a public computer, only to find that the previous person did not log out of their Yahoo email account. They had over 2500 emails in their in box.

Now, I realize that I am a super tidy person in the real world & in cyber space, but when I am done with email, I hit the delete key. There is seldom anything in my in box.

How do you handle finished email? Are you a pack rat, too?

Rob Carpenter and Friendgiftr.com

I had the exciting opportunity to interview an up and coming young entrepreneur. Rob Carpenter, in October 2008 started Friendgiftr. It is an inovative idea, buying brand name gift cards on friendgiftr.com, Facebook and other social networks.

I hope you will check out Friendgiftr.com.

File your taxes electronically

The first year I filed my federal income taxes electronically was 1999, and have done so most of the years since.

It is an amazing process, when you stop and think about it.

Yesterday, I filed, and within two hours, I got a notice that I had erroneously left off ONE digit on the FEIN of an employer. Amazing!

Some of the state taxes can be tricky to file electronically.

What good or bad experiences have you had with electronic filing?

New credit card laws

Today, many new credit card laws go into effect that mostly protect you, the consumer. Be careful. Make sure a new annual fee or some other costly change doesn't sneak in.

Anger management

There seems to be an epidemic of anger management problems with people.

Recently, a disgruntled person flew his plane into the IRS in Austin, Texas. No, he wasn't just going to great heights to get a tax deduction for the loss of his plane. He was just mad.

How do you deal with anger?

Addiction and Tiger Woods

Okay, so the man apoligized. Good for him. But I wonder about calling his problem, an addiction. Addiction implies the inability to exercise self control.

I don't think so, Tiger.

And one can only imagine what skills and techniques are learned in rehab!

Susan Boyle and American Idol

I may be the only person who has never watched American Idol on TV. But I hear people talking. And I've heard all the buzz about Susan Boyle. This Scotish woman transformed into a worldwide singing sensation, literally, overnight. Susan Boyle indeed has a beautiful voice.

You never can tell by looking at someone. Remember Gomer Pyle, aka Jim Nabors?

Preventing identity theft

Well, it's hit close to home! A teacher friend of mine is a victim of identity theft. Hackers used her Facebook account and contacted her friends for money. Identity theft is very scary.

How do you prevent yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft?

Planting garlic in Zone 5

I love garlic. I'd like to plant garlic in my garden here in Central Illinois in Zone 5. What experience have you had gardening in Zone 5.

I understand it is planted in fall in a generally sunny place in the garden.

Can I just plant cloves of garlic bought at the supermarket?

Buying generics at the grocery

I am always looking for the best bargain, but never to sacrifice quality or value. I often buy generic products.

What do you think about generics? Are they equal or inferior to the real thing?

Living in the Past

I know several people who seem to live in the past. When you ask them what they do, they tell you what they've done. When they talk with you, they dwell on insignificant events of the past.

I think that people who live in the past, aren't very happy with the present. They can't seem to be here now.

What do you think?

Bonnie Blair and the Winter Olympics

The olympis are on.

Local athlete, Bonnie Blair, broke records in speed skating in the 1988 winter olympics. People who know her say she is a lovely person.

Skating is not big here in Champaign-Urbana. College football and high school basketball are the main sports.

What sports do you participate in?

Fruit trees and garden seeds

We are counting the days until spring.

I have been reading the biography of Luther Burbank. You don't think too much about him, but in the late 1800s he was experimenting with hybrid plants, and today's many varieties of fruit trees and vegetable seeds are the result of his hard work.

What do you plant in your garden?

Abraham Lincoln's birthday - a child's view, in 1963

Digging through some old files, I found this poem I wrote on the family Smith Corona manual typewriter while in middle school, around 1963.

Happy Birthday Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was his name.
This is the story to all of his fame.

Born in February, 1809,
He lived in Kentucky part of the time.
Born to Nancy Hanks and Tom Lincoln,
In his spare time he was usually thinkin’.

One day the Lincolns went from Indiana to Kentucky,
But, you see, this was very unlucky.
For in Indiana Mrs. Lincoln did die,
Leaving a tear in everyone’s eye.

When Lincoln was older a surveyor he’d be
This happened in May, 1833.
Lincoln, in 1834
Ran for state legislature.

He won the election and went to the capitol.
And after this, his career was entirely political.
In 1860, for president he was elected.
And now that he was in, slavery was restricted.

He gave a speech at Gettysburg on November night.
And all the people knew that he was right.
One night everyone heard that Lincoln was dead.
John Wilkes Booth had shot him in the head.

Global warming?

Today, I saw a weather map that showed 70% of the United States is covered with snow right now; each of the fifty states has snow somewhere.

I find that interesting.

Is there snow where you live?

Pluto no longer a planet

The compuser Gustav Holst had it right. Holst's The Planets only acknowledges eight planets, not nine. Perhaps Gustav already knew that Pluto was considered an asteroid, not a planet.

What do you think about Pluto not being a planet?

Another Illinois earthquke

Tuesday in the wee early morning hours, up near Chicago was a rare earhtquake measuring approximately 4 on the Richter Scale.

We are about 130 miles south of there. But we felt the rumble here.

What earthquakes have you experienced.

Aging rock stars

Amazingly, The Who are still performing those great old songs of the 1960s and 1970s, sounding as great as ever.

I believe the Rolling Stones are still together, too.

What other old rock groups are still performing?

Shopping at the Home Depot

I love home improvement stores. I especially enjoy wandering through the Home Depot and getting inspired to do projects around the house.

I just discovered the perfect time to shop at Home Depot and avoid any crowds; go to the Home Depot when the Superbowl is on.

I was the only customer in the entire store!

What is your favorite kind of store?

Irving Berlin

We watched a biography of Irving Berlin. Wow. I never imagined he wrote so many great American tunes. Irving Berlin's life story was fascinating.

Ben Stein

A character I find intriguing is Ben Stein. He has had an interesting career history. Remember him in Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Or maybe you've seen Ben Stein's Money.

I enjoy Ben Stein's financial and political commentaries.

Riding the bus

The weather was awful today, so I rode the bus.

One of the best movies I saw and books I read was

I met the author a few years ago as she was finishing her book.

Illinois Election Day February 2010

Yesterday was our state primaries. Our governor and also our senator positions have had quite a bit of national press in the past year.

My friend who has dementia, to the point that he has difficulty remembering the names of his friends, went and voted. I had difficulty choosing between candidates; I can only imagine how he might have chosen how to vote.

I find that intriguing.

But, after all, we Americans all have the right to vote.

What do you think?

Groundhog Day

Yesterday was Groundhog Day. I am all for traditions, but that seems like a silly one.

How did the groundhog day tradition get started?

Prairie Ensemble shines again

Last night's concert at the Canopy Club was wonderful. People were wonderfully surprised by the ambiance of the club and enjoyed food and drink. Jordan Kaye and the Prairie Dogs opened the concert with some fun blue grass music.

Featured was the Prairie Ensemble playing Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale.
