Sesquecentennials

I love celebrating just about anything. I hosted a neighborhood fest when my house turned 100, and another party marking my thirty years living in the house.

Last night I attended a lively 150 year celebration rich in history, legends, storytelling and music. And or course the food and fellowship was terrific.

What have been some of your favorite celebrations?

Lions and tigers and bears

I spent yesterday in a seventh grade science class. The students were great (for middle schoolers, on a toasty Friday, at the end of the semester, when their regular teacher was away), but the menagerie in the classroom freaked me out. There were three fish aquariums, some caged lizards, guinea pigs, and a bunch of other animals that I couldn't identify. They were all rattling around in their cages, scratching and making weird noises.

What experiences have you had in a classroom as a child or adult?

Name game

I spent yesterday with a delightful groups of first grade students. As always, I started the morning by writing my name on the chalkboard and introducing myself, pronouncing my name as "Car" and "plus". Usually the kids get it right.

I've been called Mrs. Car Pool and Mrs. Cartwheel, and some other scrambled versions of Karplus. Yesterday, I was called Mrs. Car Wash. An honest mistake!

How has your name been mispronounced?

There's no place like home

The County Market was wonderful to me, but so was ATT who hurried my replacement modem to me.

Who has given you exceptional customer service?

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Dots and dashes

Here at the County Market they have Western Union services. That surprises me.

Do people still send telegrams and wire money? It seems that in this electronic age that we live in should replace all the old Western Union services.

What's up with this?

Young musical genuis

Last night's Baroque concert was incredible, featuring young award-winning musicians.

I took piano lessons as a child, but, well, use it or lose it, as they say.

What musical instruments do you play?

Weekend bridge

Champaign-Urbana hosts the annual regional bridge tournament each Memorial Day weekend. Though certainly no bridge expert (understatement), I help with it each year. Yesterday was fun. I know many of the local players. The "bridge culture" is rather intriguing.

What games do you enjoy?

Free WiFi

My broken modem at home has not yet been replaced by ATT.

So here I sit at the County Market supermarket. It seems like an unlikely spot for free WiFi, but hey, it works!

What unusual spot is there in your town with free WiFi?

Blogging blues

Bye bye blog
Bye bye happiness

Here I sit at the local library, as my DSL service at home is not working. Methinks it may be the modem. A new one is on order. With the holiday weekend, it could be a week before I get my new modem. Then the issue becomes: is it a broken modem or something in the system.

Be patient. More blogs coming, whenever...

Is a person doing a good deed if it is also self serving?

I wonder.

Tommy

Last night, Tommy in Concert may have been the best performance I have ever seen. I have always loved the music and the singers/actors were fabulous.

Maple maple everywhere

Yikes we have lots of those little seeds.

What a good excuse to try out my new Nikon Coolpix 220 and see if I can add images to my blogs.
Wow, it worked! I'm an electronics genuis!

Big bad bikes

The city of Springfield is considering the regulation of bicycle speeds. This sounds a bit excessive to me.

What are your thoughts about giving people citations who are bicycling too fast?

In the gutter

With so many maple trees growing around here, this is the time of year when their helicopter-like seeds fall off and twirl around, covering lawns and clogging gutters. So, I did my semi-annual climb to my roof, to scoop out my gutters.

What a yukky mess!

I don't really mind going out on the roof; I actually enjoy it. But I am wondering if anyone has had any success with any of the commercial products or devices to eliminate gutter cleaning.

Anyone?

Raining cats and dogs

Sump pump-a-rama

Holy guacamole! It rained here in a big way. The yard looked like a lake. While it was pouring rain, the street looked like a river, with water up to the curb. Photos in the local newspaper of cars submerged.

The sump pump in the basement has been running non-stop. That’s a good thing, because, I’ll have a dry basement.

Crazy weather where you live?

Heard it through the grapevine

I am tired of paying a fortune for grapes, my favorite snack. So, a couple weeks ago I planted a grapevine, seedless Concords. The plant looked dead.

Well, we've had so much rain since then, and my little vine already has many green leaves on it. Hard to tell how large it will get by the end of the summer. I know it will be a few years before I can expect to see grapes growing in my yard.

What is your favorite thing to grow in your home garden?

Whodunit

Yesterday, I had to be fingerprinted for my job as part of a routine background test since I work with children. I find the concept intriguing that my prints are unique, as are everyone's.

What other jobs require background checks?

How did you celebrate Mother's Day?

Cinderella

The performance of the ballet Cinderella last night at the historic Virginia Theater was superb. But perhaps the best part was seeing all the little girls in the audience all dressed up looking very lovely and princess-like.

I really enjoy the music of Prokofiev, and Cinderella may be his best!

Wayward goose

How strange to come out of my house at 7 am and see a goose standing on my neighbor's lawn. You usually see geese in the little pond 1/2 mile here at Lowe's, but never in the neighborhood.

What can I say?

Debbie does digital

Say Cheese!

I just ordered a digital camera, Nikon Coolpix S220 and some accessories, after lots of shopping around. It should arrive this week. I need to learn how to use it.

Stay tuned for future images on this blog.

Foraging for dandy lions

So, I’m saving lots of money and minimizing my trash by making my own soy milk, yogurt, sprouts and microwave popcorn in a paper bag. Now I know what’s next.
I had forgotten how huge my crop of dandelions in my lawn is each spring. I had always viewed it as a menace.

Now I learn that the greens make a healthful salad, and the roots can be roasted and brewed as delicious “coffee”. As they say, when ya got lemons, make lemonade.

Stay tuned!

What about this, Rabbi Kushner?

You explained to us Why Bad Things Happen to Good People.

But what about Why Good Things Happen To Bad People?

Read the lies on gravestones and other places. Some folks just never get their comeuppance. It just isn’t fair!

How do we make peace with this lack of logical consequences?

Being Money Smart

Our community hosted numerous free workshops and seminars to recognize Money Smart Week.

Has this been celebrated in your town, too?

I am working on an article about teaching kids about money. What ideas do you have about this? How do you determine how much allowance your kids get?

Psyched up

Yesterday, I biked to campus to be a subject in a psychology experiment. It's easy and painless and fun. Living in a college town, one can make a few bucks while helping to be part of important scientific research.

What focus groups, studies, or research have you been done?

Enjoying Arcadia Chamber Players

What a lovely evening last night, very relaxing, being entertained in a home with a panoramic wooded view, while listening to live chamber music.

After the concert, we socialized and tasted sumptuous healthy snacks.

Kudos to Marina, Mary and Debra for the beautiful sounds.

Deciding what's important

If someone came to the door and said you must leave quickly and will never return, what one object would you take with you? That was the in-class assignment given to my sixth grade students today as a preview of studying the holocaust and Diary of Anne Frank.

Some students suggested self protective items such as guns or baseball bats. Others chose memory items such as cameras. Still, others mentioned comfort items such as a stuffed animal or special pillow. A few thought of something practical such as a Swiss army knife.
My laptop computer came to my mind both to document my story and to communicate to others.

What one item would you choose?
