Patrol boys

Growing up in the city of Chicago, I remember depending on the patrol boys, kids that were 5th grade or older, to get us across busy streets safely as we walked to and from school.

I have no memories of patrol boys when we lived in the suburbs, but I rode the yellow school bus for school transportation, so I may had just had no dealings with them.

Today, they call them safety patrol, as they have included girls as safety 'officers' in this age of equality.

Do they have safety patrol where you live?

Champaign Central High School's drama department

Excellent performance of Sweeney Todd. The acting, singing, dancing, choral work, orchestra, set and sound was all over the top.

Nice job, Central!

Leave the leaves

Leaves, leaves everywhere. Autumn in Central Illinois is breathtaking, but there sure are a lot of leaves to deal with when you have a yard with three very large old maple trees, four fruit trees, and some bushes. Plus, most of the neighbors don't deal with their leaves, so I have some of them on my lawn also.

My goal is to never pick up a rake. I do this by faithfully using my mulching mower ever few days.

It is illegal to burn leaves here. I have wonderful childhood memories of raking and burning leaves, and I used to do that here in Champaign until they made it illegal.

What ideas do you have for dealing with autumn leaves that isn't tough on an old lady's back?

Sticky situation

I walked into the 5th grade classroom. The chairs were upside down on the students' desks so that the custodian could sweep. I noticed petrified chewing gum under several of the seats. I don't think that gum under chairs ever gets removed.

My children went to school there 1981 - 1988. Had they been gum chewers, I might have suspected that this was their gum.

National Gallery of Writing

http://www.galleryofwriting.org

This is a very cool web site! You definitely do NOT need to be an experienced or published writer to get on board. Nor do you need to live in the state where you want you short or longer piece of work in the writing "museum".

Be sure to check out the site and submit some sample of writing.

Tired or retired?

When making an appointment for a tire rotation, my service place (which happens to sell tires), insisted that a car with 46,000 miles must need new tires.

Being a skeptic and a cheapskate, I went online to find out how you can tell if when to buy new tires. I thought I'd find something rather technical. Instead, I found this:

Take a penny. Stick it upside down into the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you need new tires.

Mr. Lincoln would be so pleased to know how his image is being used.

Incinerators

As a child, I was intrigued by the incinerator in my grandma's apartment building. It seemed like you could throw any and all garbage into the incinerator.

Do they still use incinerators today? Are there restrictions as to what trash can go into an incinerator? It seems that there would be some environmental concerns.

Six year olds in the news

A 6 year old boy in the Denver area "disappears' in a weather balloon, only to be found hiding in the garage.

A different six year old boy near the East Coast gets suspended from school for 45 days because he's brought a Swiss army utensil for show-and-tell.

The world makes less sense to me every day.

Disability Resource Expo 2009

The annual Disability Resource Expo doesn't sound like a cool event, but let me tell you, they had the corridors of the mall filled with fascinating and useful booths and exhibits, and a huge number of people visiting the Expo.

The only reason that I was there, is that I sing in Parkland College Chorus, and we were invited to provides some of the entertainment for the Expo.

As an occupational therapist, I have heard this statistic many times, that one in seven of us will have a disability at some point in our lives. That is a number worth acknowledging!

Baseball caps

When did baseball caps become a necessary fashion accessory for young, and some older balding, men?

My neighbor moved in about two months ago, and I have never seen him 'hat-less'. At least he wears it with the brim facing toward the front!

Multi tasking

This morning I was on hold for a long time while trying to talk with a company who "values me as a customer". I know that because their recoded message mentioned that at least 25 times, as I waited.

I accomplished much while on hold including performing some computer tasks, and preparing my seven-course breakfast.

What experiences have you had while being on hold on the phone?

Xray vision at the airport?

I heard on the news that airport screening techniques will become far more high tech. Maybe I will be able postpone go the expensive biannual bone density test and instead get a cheap air ticket to anywhere. This could actually save me money and be much more fun!

I-Pan Steel Drum Band

We walked to the Champaign Public Library yesterday, a perfect crisp autumn day with leaves turning beautiful colors.

Lucky us! The University of Illinois Steel Drum Band was performing there! How can you not feel good listening to the music of steel drums! After the show, I talked to the performers and was able to try the drums. Very cool! The band is open to new members; if you can read music (which I can), you learn as you go. Hmmm.

Homecoming

Champaign-Urbana is a big football town, especially for the University of Illinois and for the local high school teams.

This weekend is homecoming for UI and for Champaign Central High School. Yesterday, I attended Central's Pep Rally. Cheerleading has changed much since I was at New Trier West High School in the late 1960s; the cheering has become more dance-like and much more provocative.

I have never been much of a spectator sports fan.

What is your favorite sport?

Pack rats and hoarders

Oprah has had several shows which featured pack rats and hoarders. I know several people who hoard things and have homes that are barely habitable, as a result.

I am the opposite. I am ruthless about getting rid of unused stuff and have an aversion to clutter.

Which type of person are you?

Hardy's Reindeer Ranch

We spent a lovely afternoon at Hardy's Reindeer Ranch, just outside Rantoul. The reindeer were cute & we got lost in the corn maze.

A farce

We enjoyed the play at Parkland College, Lend Me a Tenor. But, I have to admit, I've never really learned to appreciate the farce.

What forms of comedy do you prefer?

Peanut allergies

Growing up in the 1950s, I don't remember hearing about anyone being allergic to peanuts. In fact, I don't remember people being allergic to much of anything; at least they didn't talk about it.

how is it that allergies, especially peanut allergies have become so prevalent and serious in the past ten years or so?

Sifting through old stuff

Cleaning out a kitchen drawer, I found my old flour sifter. Frankly, I don't rememberever using it.

Do people sift flour anymore? What does sifting accomplish? What tools and appliances do you have lurking in your home that you no longer use?
