Luckof the Irish

We loved the Dublin Symphony last night. The orchestra was fabulous and the singing, dancing and solo instruments were beyond words. A very personable ensemble!

What performance have you attended that was especially well done?

Let's face it

I must be very old fashioned or just old, or maybe just a bit too private, but I just don’t get Face book. I have a big network of real friends. Why would I want to waste my time connecting networking with virtual friends?

Am I missing something?

Pet projects

Why all the fuss about dogs and cats in the White House? Poor Socks the Cat just died. How sad the Clinton's must be. Now the Obama's are getting a dog for the girls. Why can’t our presidents be more imaginative with their choice of pets? And what’s up with the silly pet names?

I might be more satisfied if White House pets were named after some of our greatest presidents. Might I suggest a few of the following? Listen up, please Mr. O.
· Franklin the ferret (what a new deal that would be)
· Hoover the hamster (he could just go spinning around but making no progress)
· Teddy the turtle (if he had a rough ride, he could hide in his shell)
· Pierce the parrot (he could become the White House spokesman)

And if the president’s family must have a cat, then might I suggest the name Garfield, or has someone tried that already?

What more imaginative pets might you recommend to our incoming president?

Waiting to wait

I hate sitting in doctor’s waiting rooms. You look around and your imagination runs wild wondering why all these people need to see the doctor. If you are just there for a check-up, it is likely that the other folks sitting there are sicker than you are. Who knows what disease you may come whom with after sitting there. I wouldn’t ever use the restroom at the doctor’s office either.

One guy sitting there had very long stringy blond hair and was reading women’s fashion magazines. Weird! A guy sitting next to me had a hacking cough. Then he gets on his cell phone telling someone that he has a bad case of the flu and is getting a chest x-ray. YUK! Some soap opera was on the TV, no one was watching, but there was no way to turn off the TV. I ran into several people I knew, but I didn’t dare ask “how are you?”

What experiences have you had while waiting for the doctor?

Wii

I was introduced to Wii last night. It's interesting technology and the games seem fun. Personally, I'd rather play real games than video-type games.

What do you think of Wii and other games like it?

Politically incorrect

Last night we watched the 1969 DVD of Putney Swope. What a wacky retro film. I had seen it when it first came out.

Do you remember any older films that you especially liked?

Our savior

I was helping in a first grade class at the parochial school. 'Emma's' mom had told me that their dog had died and that the family had had a discussion about death as natural part of life.

I helped Emma work on her Abe Lincoln coloring project. "My doggie died', she stated, "and Abe Lincoln will make it okay".

Master of the card

YIKES! My Mastercard number, as well as that of thousands of other Mastercard customers, was "compromised". Kudos to the good folks at Mastercard. They handled it professionally and quickly. My new card arrived in overnight mail.

Was anyone else a victim of this recent Mastercard hacking?

Knot in the gut

Bernard Madoff. He made off like a bandit. What a scum bag. It seemed like someone else's misfortune, until I happened to notice his name on some of my financial documents. Yikes. It's hard to believe that my reputable discount brokerage didn't check out this creep. Fortunately, it appears that my transactions were unaffected. Whew!

Does anyone know someone who has directly been affected by the Bernard Madoff scandal?

Eight is enough

What is up with this lady with the octuplets? Raising children is a very very big responsibility and involves some financial resources also.

The world makes less sense to me every day.

Can anyone shed light on why someone would want so many babies?

Evolution of greatness

Honest Abe was born in Springfield Illinois on February 12, 1809. Composer Felix Mendelson was born in Hamburg Germany in February 1809.

Now I’ve discovered that in England, Charles Darwin was born February 12, 1809, also. There couldn’t have been a blackout that caused this population explosion of great men, because I don’t think they had electricity then, so maybe it was a full moon. Or could I have been some magical potion poured into the seven seas?

Should we be doing more celebrating of 200 years?

Felixir of Life

Happy Birthday Felix Mendelson. Last night at the symphony, they featured some of his music. Though, he wrote that very famous wedding march for Midsummer Night's Dream, and it was Valentine's Day, they played some of his other music. Interesting. Born February 3, 1809, I wonder if he got all the hype of Abe Lincoln for his 200th birthday!

Do you suppose Hamburg Germany, Mendelson's birthplace, has Land of Felix on their license plates like we do for Lincoln here in Illinois?

VD

Happy Valentine’s Day.

I’ll admit that my very first crush was Captain Kangaroo. Gosh, how I wanted to get my hands into those big pockets. I was shocked when I found out that Bob Keeshan was only in his early 30s when he played the Captain. I miss Mr. Green Jeans, Bunny Rabbit and Mr. Moose, but a piece of me died in January 2004 when old buddy Bob died an untimely death at age 77.

Who was your first crush?

Domestic diva

Frugality rules! Though admittedly, I have minimal domestic skills, but I am also very frugal. It seems that my kitchen has been transformed into a food factory. Here’s an update on my money saving kitchen adventures, since time is money.

For several years I have been growing my own sprouts: wheat, lentil, mung, and adzuki.
I now have perfected homemade yogurt and also corn bread.
I’ve got the popcorn surprise mastered. When I used a plastic bowl, the popcorn tasted great except that I melted the bottom of the bowl. Then I tried a paper sack, lunch bag size. And, voila, tasty popcorn!
Now for the latest, soymilk. Yum!

What's cookin' in your kitchen that saves you money?

Happy Birthday Abie Baby

Mr. Lincoln, why you don’t look a day over 55, even though you turn 200 today! I’m a big fan of three-day weekends, but I strongly object to putting many holidays on Monday’s such as the upcoming President’s Day. I’m celebrating Abe’s big day today.

Four score and seven years ago today; the Gettysburg Address was only 272 words. If only poor Abe had the use of a computer and spell-check. I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but my articles for Young Money are about 800 words each. (This blog entry is 224 words. Perhaps ,Abe would be proud of me.)

The Land of Lincoln has really been in the spotlight lately. Our Senator became President. Burris becomes Senator. Our governor became talk show icon. I doubt that any of these folks will be carved on Mount Rushmore.

Obama will be in Springfield for the birthday bash. Imagine Air Force One at the tiny Springfield Airport. In January 1998, President Clinton was at our little airport, which only has 4 gates. It was during a winter thaw and Air Force got stuck in the mud. It made national headlines.

In my lifetime, I don’t remember any President leaving office and anyone feeling sad, except for Kennedy. Do you think Lincoln was as popular during his presidency as he is today?

WMT Rx

Though I am not a big fan of Wal-Mart and don’t like going into the store, I think that the drive-up pharmacy is the best thing since sliced bread. It is so easy to use; the experience just makes you want to buy drugs.

Shop til you pop

I’m tired of spending so much money on microwave popcorn. I’ve heard that you can just use kernels in a paper bag and pop it in the microwave.

Does anyone know how to do this without setting the kitchen on fire?

She walks on water

We are having this major thaw right now and all that snow that we’ve had is melting and I’m getting rather skilled at walking on water. And to think it was zero degrees a week ago, and only seven degrees just a couple mornings ago. Right now it’s nearly sixty! My yard is like a big lake. Too bad I sold my sailboat last year!

People get a little crazy here when we have one of these unseasonable warm days. I was driving on campus and saw students wearing shorts. A couple of girls were taking their twin pet ferrets for a walk. And someone else was roller blading through deep puddles.

Just south of the campus are the South Farms. University of Illinois is known for its agriculture school. On a warm and windy day, the strong aroma of cows and pigs fills the air for miles. Most people hate that smell, but personally I find it refreshing. Maybe my suburban roots got wired funny and I am a farm girl at heart.

Do you have spring fever?

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Seasonings

Today, the weather is much warmer and I realize how slow winter feels and that everything seems to take more time. And there is less daylight, giving the illusion of shorter days. Today, I don't have any snow to shovel, nor am I using the wood burning stove. Suddenly, I find myself with some found time. Perhaps I will get more writing done this weekend.

My favorite season is summer, then spring, then fall, and last is winter. What is your favorite season?

The last page

My favorite bookstore, Pages for all Ages, just went out of business. I remember when they opened in 1988. We didn’t have Borders or Barnes & Noble back then. Nor did we have our expanded libraries here. Amazon.com had yes come into existence yet either. This is a sad result of the recession.

I am not surprised. When I was at Pages in late December, the store looked very empty and there were other clues, too.

How is your life being impacted by the recession?

Being responsible

Here's a letter that I wrote to our local newspaper that is being published this week.

These are interesting times in history at both the state and national levels. Americans have been promised change. But truthfully, it shouldn’t matter who is in Washington leading our country. Each of us individually should do a better job taking ownership of our own lives. We need to stop expecting ‘bailouts’ from our irresponsible choices and consequences, and must manage our own personal business more sensibly.

What do you think?

A kinder and gentler America

Welcome to Arthur, Illinois, population approximately 2200, located about 30 miles south of here. This Amish community makes a wonderful retro day trip. Many of the people who live there get around by horse and cart. If fact, in the parking lot, our car was parked next to several of those.

I went there this past weekend and stocked up on bulk foods, from their quaint little grocery, some foods which are hard to find elsewhere, at incredibly good prices. I paid by check. I offered to show my identification, but was told that they didn’t need to check. Ah, what a wonderful feeling to be in a society where people still feel that they can trust each other.

Have you ever been any place like Arthur?

Superbowl

Take a bowl of Cheerios. Add non-fat milk and a bit of cocoa. Pour in some coffee. Add molasses. Stir in a small amount of peanut butter. You will love this super bowl of yummy stuff.

Any other ideas for a tasty, reasonably healthy snack?

Happy Bir

Unfinished Symphony is what we remember best about Franz Schubert, classical composer born in Austria, January 31, 1797. But his German love songs (lieder) are extraordinary and remain famous, 212 years after his birth. Happy Birthday, FS.

Is there anything that you haven't finished that could become this famous?
