Nit picking

We live in a culture where there's lots of nit picking, that is, people looking to find fault in things. I looked up that expression to see where it came from. I was not surprised; the tedious task of picking lice and their eggs, the picking of nits.

I know a family who has head lice in the household, and the expression is apropos.

And, by the way, when kids accuse others of having the "cooties", cooties are body lice.
