Spelling bee

An excellent speller, I have never been in a spelling bee. I find the idea of spelling bees to be intriguing. There have even been some movies about them in recent years.

What experiences have YOU had with spelling bees?

Making rustic furniture

Yesterday, as the Urbana Farmer's Market (which is now indoors at Lincoln Square Mall), I was attracted to the booth of the Woodlanders who make rustic furniture. These folks make furniture, ornaments, art, etc from twigs and pieces of wood. Dan Mack has written several books about this.

I also love looking at chain saw art and sculptures.

Maybe I need to spread my wings and dabble in this. The national Woodlanders group holds several workshops, including one in Wisconsin (a four hour drive from here)with a weekend of hands-on experience to learn how to make things.

Has anyone done this?

Black Friday

Getting to the stores at 4:00 am to get holiday gifts makes no sense to me. Sure, I get up early (check the times on my blog postings), and yes, I am frugal, but, my time is worth something. And so is my safety.

How did the Friday after Thanksgiving get this name? (Retailers being "in the black" after all that shopping?)

I did my shopping online. I found a great science lab for kids through Amazon.

Happy Birthday

I started this blog the Friday after Thanksgiving 2008, and here we are a year later, with approximately 330 postings by me. So, I have kept up almost daily.

My intention was to use the blog to promote my published writing (averaging 3-4 per month), and to provide commentary on live music performances, food, books to read, gardening and sustainable living, and miscellaneous chatter about quirks and observations about life and about my days.

I hope I have succeeded and kept people interested.

Onward!

Giving thanks

Excellent health, loving and supportive family and friends, a comfortable home, yard and community, venues to hear fine quality live music, engaging hobbies, audiences that appreciate my writing, healthy food, good water and clean air, opportunities to teach and mentor children and adults.

What do YOU have to be thankful for this year?

Sarah Culberson - a true princess

I had the pleasure of attending a presentation at school by
Sarah Culberson. She is the sister of one of the teachers at Carrie Busey Elementary School. Adopted shortly after birth here in Central Illinois, Sarah sought info about her birth family, only to discover that she was part of royalty in Sierra Leone. Her book was published this past summer. She is quite a dynamic speaker.

Passionate about genealogical research, I was intrigued by her story.

The holiday season

Many of my friends feel that the holiday season may be highly over-rated. The holidays remind people of what they DO NOT have, instead of being appreciative of what they do have.

How do you enjoy the holiday season?

Driving in winter

As a child, growing up in Chicago, with its tough winters, I remember people changing to snow tires, putting chains on their tires, and warming up their cars.

It's been years since I've heard of anyone doing any of these things to prepare for driving in winter.

Do they?

Sense about scents

My sensitive nose cannot handle strong perfume. It is especially challenging in a car, office or other small enclosed place.

Do these people just not smell how strong their scent is?

Strange sights

Yesterday, it was raining hard. While driving, I spotted a man face down on the sidewalk. Worried that he had fallen and was injured, I pulled over and stopped. Apparently he had not fallen at all; before I could get out of the car, I noticed that this guy doing push-ups. Hmm. Seemed odd.

While on the highway, I passed a pick up truck with a trailer; on the trailer was a helicopter. A strange sight indeed.

What unusual sights have you spotted while out and about?

Friday the 13th

Last week was Friday the 13th. The day went by without mention.

How and when did the number thirteen get to be unlucky? Anyone...

( I think it's funny that hotels do not have a floor numbered "13".)

Lightning Strikes the Colonies- a book to read

I know author C.L.Fagan, of Lightning Strikes the Colonies, and she has worked very diligently writing this book. Amazon.com sells Lightning Strikes the Colonies. I read several 5-star ratings that predict that Fagan's book will be a bestseller.

Check it out!

Alfred Hitchcock Frenzy

I love watching Alfred Hitchcock movies. They are so incredibly well done. but, in my opinion, they must be in black and white to be enjoyable.

The other day, I brought home 'Frenzy'. It was in color, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it.

What to do?

Re-tiring this week!

Well, the verdict is in; My car needs new tires. I'm good with that. It's a 6 year old car & knowing the cost of the new tires, I calculate that it cost me $4 per month to have tires. A nominal amount.

So, here's the tricky part. I am NOT a wasteful person. The tire dealers routinely charge to dispose of the old tires. I'm okay with that, also.

But it occurred to me that there may be some use (in the yard, perhaps) for the old tires.

I welcome your suggestions.

Lady bugs

They're EVERYWHERE!!! Some seasons we get huge numbers of lady bugs, outdoors and in. Other autumns we don't see many of them.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Gutter mutter

In the gutter again: an Ode to Fallen Leaves

The leaves are down, the trees are bare,
The air is still and dry.
Time to clean the gutters;
There's to better way to try.

So up I went through the bedroom window,
Got onto the roof carefully.
My leaf-stuffed gutters are now
Just as clean as they can be!

Password

The first time I encountered the word "Password" was the game show in the 1960s. Out cousin was on that show back then. I think the game show is still on TV, but I don't know.

Today, all of us have many many passwords for just about everything we do online and off.

i am generally a very organized person, but I have no clue how to keep track of all my passwords, especially since I periodically change them. Some require numbers, some letters, some both. And it's a good idea NOT to write them all down somewhere.

How do YOU suggest a person keep track of their many passwords?

Dear Grandmother

We used to call our grandmothers "Grandma Jones", for example. We used their LAST name My little grandson calls me "Grandma Debbie". His big sister just calls me "Debbie".

Grannie? Grandmother? Grandma? Oma? Bubbie?

What do you call your grandmother? What do your grandchildren call you?

Initial reaction

A message from Debra L. Karplus, MS, OTR/L (registered and licensed occupational therapist with a Master's Degree)

Smoking around children

I find it so sad when young children at school smell like cigarettes. What a share that they need to be subjected to the risks without having any choice, at such a young age.

Detector rejecter

A caring friend gave me a carbon monoxide detector for a gift. I plugged it into a strategic location near the stove. Its green light shone. It remained quiet, a good sign, so I appropriately ignored it.

One day, I came home to hear it buzzing. Its red light was on. I unplugged it and put it in a new location. The buzzing persisted. I moved it again. I became disgusted with my new high tech device and tossed it aside.

Then it occurred to me. Perhaps I have a carbon monoxide leak. I restored the detector to its original position and it buzzed once again.

I didn’t know what to do so I phoned the power company. They came to my house quickly and alerted me to the fact that I did, in fact, have a carbon monoxide leak in my oven. They disconnected my oven and left quickly.

I learned to treat my technology with respect and never again be a detector rejecter.

Gift giving

Some people are good at gift giving. This is a skill that I have never mastered. And the holiday season is quickly approaching.

My friend Jack used to send me his homemade fruitcake. Jack died last March 25, and though I miss Jack often, I don't miss the fruitcake.

For many years a client in St. Louis used to mail homemade fudge to me each holiday season. Several years ago, a box from her arrived, but the box cover said "Parquetry Blocks". Though we occupational therapists find these blocks useful with some of our patients with fine motor and perceptual motor dysfunction, I was a bit disappointed not to have fudge. Hurriedly, I tossed the unopened box in our game closet with monopoly, Scrabble and the others.

Last year my friend Diana came over with her five year old son. He seemed bored, so I showed him the game closet. Confused, he brought the opened Parquetry blocks box to me. What was fudge (now, quite aged) doing in this box. Did I ever feel silly!

What gift giving stories can you share?

Obesity

Obesity is a growing problem in this country. I feel very lucky to have good genes and good eating habits such that I can maintain 110 pounds on a 5 foot 2 inch frame.

But, on TV, when they frequently have stories about obesity, they always show real (headless) obese people walking down the street.

I guess they don't need their permission to air these shots. I just think it would feel awful to be watching a story about obesity on TV and see YOUR large body on the screen.

Hmmm...

Be a subject in medical research?

There are some interesting studies that pay subjects to participate in medical research. I find this very interesting.

Some of the sleep studies pay as much as $9000. That's more than just pocket change, but I wonder what they put you through for that kind of dough.

What experiences have you had as a subject in a study?

Physical Education

Physical education classes are required for all grades K-12 in Ilinois. But growing up in the 1950s in Chicago, I don't remember ever taking PE until I was in a 6th grade junior high school in the suburbs.

Has PE always been a required class?

Perhaps I'm spoiled by good drinking water here in Champaign-Urbana, or perhaps I'm just clueless, but I just don't understand the bottled water craze.

Why pay for something that you can get for free?
