Fasting

Jewish people fast from sunset to sunset on Yom Kippur each fall to atone for sins. Other religions fast for other reasons. Some people fast for health reasons.

What experience have you had with fasting?

Changing of the seasons

I absolutely love the changing of the seasons here in Central Illinois. Though I am not a big fan of winter or of cold weather, I enjoy getting the house and yard ready for it.

Fall may have begun September 21, or after Labor Day in the eyes of some, but here the season changed at about 2:00 am when gusty winds turned our balmy 75 degree days much cooler.

Saw these folks, the Capitol Steps, at the Virginia Theater last night. Very very funny stuff!!!

Longfellow genealogy

I met someone today who said she is a descendant of the famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who was born 1807 and died 1882. I am a big genealogy hobbyist.

Does anyone know anything about Longfellow's descendants? I know he had a son Charles born 1844 who may not have had children, and a son Ernest, born 1845, who probably is the ancestor of the person I met today. Longfellow's other four children were girls.

Anyone?

Classical music for all ages

I enjoy classical music and many of the live performances I attend are symphonies. No matter how many times I hear the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2 performed, it is always wonderful!

But, few people under fifty years old can be seen at the performances.

How do we get younger people interested in the classics?

School librarian

One of the best jobs to have would be school librarian. You get to read stories to kids, preview and order books, and work in a generally relaxed environment.

What ideal jobs do you know?

Archaic adages

Like a broken record
Clockwise
Cheesecloth
Thimble

Adults all know what these are, most kids don't.

Can you think of more words or expressions that have lost their meaning over time?

Bugged

I'm not sure if they are gnats or fruit flies or some other pesty insect, but large swarms of them are everywhere and they land on your clothes and skin and bite you. I have never experienced this before.

Could unusual weather be the cause?

Guiding Light

It's been big news this week. The soap opera Guiding Light went off the air after 70 or so years. I've never watched it, or any other daytime TV. Seems like an incredible waste of time.

The closest I was to being hooked on a soap opera was Knot's Landing, a spinoff of the show Dallas, in the early 1990s. Looking back, I can't think about what drove me to waste my Thursday night's watching Val and Gary and the rest of the Ewings and neighbors often up to no good.

Today, I seldom watch TV. We don't have cable TV here and the only TV we have is about 9 inches in diameter. Since the digital switch this past June, we are limited to approximately 5 channels on a good day.

What is your favorite TV show?

In the beginning

Before there was texting, there was Hebrew, a language that solely depends on 32 consonants (symbols), no vowels.

L'shana tova, to those who celebrate.

These are the best of times, they are the worst of times -- a joyful celebratory holiday, but sad that even in a small community such as this, tight police protection is required at places of worship.

Happy Jewish New Year!

Time to turn the garden

Soon it will be time to turn the garden. I do it twice a year, spring and autumn.

When you live somewhere without changing seasons, and you grow crops ongoing, WHEN do YOU turn the garden?

Wrinkle remover

I nearly stopped when I spotted a sign saying "wrinkle remover". I thought I could have a younger appearance.

Then I noticed the place was a laundromat and that they removed wrinkles from clothing not faces.

Maybe I need my eyes examined

Ani Difranco plays at Krannert

Her concert was fabulous. I had never heard of Ani before, but obviously she has many fans who know her music. I gained a new appreciation for acoustic guitar.

Prairie Ensemble begins a new season

The Mozart piece was lovely.

Patrons walked in with a surprised look on their faces as they stepped into the Opera House for the receptions and performance. Few knew that the Opera House even existed and it is a real treasure of a building.

It turns out we have several old Opera Houses here in Champaign-Urbana that have been renovated as offices and housing.

What old opera houses exist in your town?

Fighting Illini fans

I had forgotten that this was the opening home football game and had forgotten about traffic near Memorial Stadium.

Despite the evening kickoff time, there were tailgate parties all afternoon, making driving on the south part of town literally impossible all day and night.

This is about the only traffic issue we have here in Champaign-Urbana, other than what they call 'rush minute' at around 5 pm each weekday.

How is the traffic in your town?

Accumulating autographs

As a kid I accumulated a few autographs. I have them stashed away here, not sure where. But the autograph that I do remember is from Col. Sanders, the fried chicken guy.

We were on a family vacation, stopping in Arizona, Phoenix or Tucson, and there at breakfast at the Holiday Inn, we spotted the old colonel.

As an adult, I have never been particularly star-struck. I've been in close proximity to various celebrities, and they are just regular people like you and me, who just happen to have high profile jobs.

I've been on an airplane with Wilt Chamberlain, who needed the leg room way more than I did. Mom and I were on the Amtrak and had breakfast with George McGovern when he was campaigning in the early 1980s. I've been at a party with Garrison Keillor. But, I didn't chase after autographs of any of these folks.

What encounters have you have with celebrities and what autographs do you have?

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Krannert Center is one of the best reasons to live in Champaign-Urbana, home of the University of Illinois. Krannert has four indoor theaters plus one outdoors. The Krannert gift (Promenade) is lovely, and Intermezzo is a great place to have a delicious quality meal before or after the concert.

Last night was the annual Opening Night Party and we had a terrific time. The event was well attended and lasted well into the night.

What opportunities exist in your town for top notch entertainment, symphony, theater, dance and more?

All aboard

I love trains. Sleeping with the windows open most nights, and living within a few blocks of the famous Amtrak City of New Orleans train and an east-west freight train, I find the sound of the train whistles to be calming.

I have fond memories of family trips on the Santa Fe and Zephyr.

What memories do you have of riding the train?

Look on the left side of the site, the slide show. My article is #2 on the slide show.

Lads & lasses with eyeglasses

When I see small children, and especially babies, who wear eyeglasses, I always wonder HOW the optician tested their eyes. It's not like they can read any of the letters on the eye chart. I have always been curious about this.

Feeling peachy

Prairie Gardens had fruit trees on sale for 60% off. So, I now have a new member in the family -- my new dwarf peach tree. It comes with a one-year guarantee. I am excited to see how well it does here. I planted it near a pear tree that produces well in that part of my yard.

Planting fruit & nut dwarf trees in Zone 5

I'd love to expand my backyard orchard.

What good or bad experiences have people in Zone 5 had with planting and growing peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and nuts?

Accolades for Andrae's Harley Davidson in Urbana

Kudos to the Harley Davidson folks for again hosting the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon here in C-U.

The Harley people here, and around the country are a good, generous, charitable community. Though I can't imagine I would ever ride a motorcycle, I have great admiration for the HDI Company.

Jerry Lewis is 84 and looking a bit worn down. I wonder how many more years he will be hosting this annual MDA event.

Advice on vase vice?

Labor Day weekend is good for a few activities, one of which is cleaning out the pantry cupboards. So what did I discover?

Over the past 30 years, I have collected over 22 flower vases. Why I, someone who is surprised by an occasional flower delivery has collected this many vases may be the 8th wonder of the world.

So, I need some ideas on uses for this gallery of odd sized and colored vases.

Downtown delight

Living near downtown of a college town is a real joy. There is something wonderful about being able to easily walk to fine entertainment and restaurants. Being near most bus routes is also a plus, especially in snowy weather.

What is the biggest advantage of your locations?

Books about self sufficiency and sustainable living?

I'm ready to take sustainable living and self sufficiency to the next level.

What books can you recommend?

Honda Civic

I love my Honda Civic. This is the third one I've owned. It's amazing all the stuff I've been able to haul in the trunk over the years, mainly firewood, but also miscellaneous home improvement supplies from places like Menard's, Home Depot and Lowe's.

Teaching driver's education

Teaching driver's ed seems like a death wish to me. But I know several people who have been teaching behind-the-wheel for a long time and seem to love doing it.

I think the pay is crummy; but the teachers find it satisfying as they feel they can really make a difference and indirectly save lives.

The lab techs who do mammograms seem to feel that way, also.

What jobs can you think of that people like because they help save lives?

Cucumber crunch

I was out in the garden picking big ripe tomatoes. I stepped on something crunchy.

It was a cucumber; I have many growing in the garden.

Who knew?

I love my Maytag

I have had my Maytag washing machine, longer than forever. It works great. but, it is noisy during the last cycle when the water is draining out.

Hearing that a Cash for Clunkers program for appliances might occur this fall, I visited the nearby locally owned appliance store to see what new washers are on the market.

The salesman/owner was very nice but would not/could not sell me a new appliance. He said that nothing I bought today would be as dependable and long-running as my Maytag.

Was he being lazy or honest?

I've decided to keep my current Maytag running until it decides to quit.

Food versus candy

A new law went into effect that puts a 'sin tax' on candy and soft drinks and other bad-for-you stuff. But, the way I understand it, anything that has flour in it, such as certain candy bars, are considered to be food. I thought I heard that yogurt is in the candy category.

This all seems rather strange to me.
