Home for a poem

April is National Poetry Month. I have no idea who establishes these special months/days, but it is nice that we have them.

I enjoy The Raven, Casey at the Bat, and the poetry of ee Cummings.

What are your favorite poems?

Snacks and snakes

Spring has arrived in our twin cities at last! I had forgotten how incredibly wonderful it is to sleep with the windows open and awaken to the chirping of birds and the wonderful outdoor smells. Ah, the fresh scent of clothes dried on the clothesline instead of in front of the wood stove all winter. And, it’s nice not wearing bazillion layers of clothes in a chilly house! We begin our weekly tennis again, hopefully though October. There are hidden yummy treasures in the yard, including dandelion leaves for salad. And, I find it absolutely charming to find snakes weaving a pattern in my firewood pile.

Yes, I think spring must be my favorite season. Certainly, not winter.

What is your favorite time of year?

A Warm and WoodenTale

Here's a tale of two streets

On my daily walk, I spotted a small pile of free firewood, perhaps five pieces. Each was cut in lengths of approximately three feet.

Upon arriving home, I got my car and headed to Garfield Street to pickup the wood, but made a wrong turn and ended up on Sabin Street instead. To my wonderful surprise, I found a much larger pile in ready-to-use firewood, already cut in lengths that are perfect for my wood stove.

Yes, there’s a moral to this little tale. Sometimes you end up on a different road that you had intended, but it turns out okay. Sometimes it is just best to leave things to chance. The outcome could please you.

Please share your story about a wrong turn with a happy ending.

Everything Ebert

Thanks to Chaz and Roger Ebert for the extraordinary collections of films here in town at the 2009 Ebertfest.

It has been a fabulous week. I especially enjoyed The Fall and Sita Sings the Blues.

Way to go, hometown boy!

Spiritual singing

Last night we enjoyed the uplifting spiritual singing of Rick Recht. Amplified music with lots of group sing-a-longs. It was the perfect end to a way-too-busy week.

How do you unwind?

Flying high with Kite Runner

I have not read the book Kite Runner, so maybe I am just blowing smoke here.

A couple months ago, some parents became upset that their high school children were reading this book which contains very graphic violent scenes that apparently are a necessary part of the story. Most people felt that the book was okay reading material for high school English class, so the book remains in the curriculum.

I personally have a problem with this.

Am I being old fashioned or should kids be required to read this kind of stuff in school?

Infomercials

I love infomercials. The enthusiasm for mediocre products by the actors is infectious. How could someone NOT want to get on the phone and dial the 800 number within the next five minutes to purchase the cooker, cleaning gadget or exercise device.

I wonder if I could star in infomercials. I smile a lot, a generally enthusiastic and have sales acumen.

How do I sign up?

Planes, trains, and automobiles

As I kid, I was fascinated by the street cleaning machines. It seemed like I spent hours standing by the curb watching them do their magic.

Now that I’m grown-up, my intrigue has been transferred to bucket trucks. As a height-challenged female, I see many uses for these ultimate macho vehicles.

Ah, the things I could reach if I had my own bucket truck: gutter cleaning, painting the upper level of the house, trimming trees, and more.

What vehicle intrigues you the most?

Kudos to United & American Airlines!

My outbound trip on United was flawless. They put me on an earlier flight and flew me first class.

My inbound flight on American was even better. Since my flight was to be four hours late and I would have missed my four-hour shuttle home, they put me on a plane that got me right to me home town at no charge. Plus, I returned home even earlier!

What exemplary customer service have you had lately?

WOW

My grandchildren are intrigued by palindromes. No, not dinosaur-like creatures, these are words that are spelled the same backwards such as mom and dad.

They pointed out that many body parts and gross words are palindromes. I don't know what to make of that!

Garden girl

Call her a squatter, call her a schnorer. In any case, planting a garden, no matter how beautiful, in the yard of a neighboring house, even if currently vacant, is not okay.

We have some interesting folks living on our block.

Any interesting stories about your neighbors?

Our farmers market starts in early May. Other places have them year-round depending on the weather. There is something delightful about buying organic foods directly from the farmer.

Lost and found

The airport confiscated my sunscreen. It was old, so probably a blessing that I need to buy fresher sunscreen.

Where does the airport put all the stuff they take from people?

Extreme makeover

My grandchildren love me, but they don't love my appearance so they decided to give me a makeover. They each put bright pink fingernail polish on my not-very-long nails. They brushed and puffed out my hair and put some blue and green colors in it, then put some barrettes in my bangs. For make-up, I got pinkish eye shadow, foundation, rosy blush and lipstick. I look so California.

I am told that I now look like Fashion Girl, except that my clothes are still not appropriate. Perhaps I need to go shopping now?

Some grave words

Visit a cemetery sometime and read the stones. Beloved husband. Devoted father. How many of these statements are true? And what secrets lurk beneath?

First class traveller

Here's a travel tip. Only use a carry-on bag and you are much more likely to get on an earlier flight, as a stand-by passenger, at no extra charge when you fly, especially when travelling alone. You may even be lucky enough to get bumped up to first class, as I did!

First class service can spoil you. Excellent food at no extra fee, and ah, those hot towels.

What flying experiences have you had?

Rush minute

Here in our little college town, we tease that each weekday at 5:00 pm we have a rush minute, as bigger cities have a rush hour.

Today, I had some errands to run during the lunch hour. This is unusual for me. I was surprised at all the crazy drivers.

How do people drive where you live? Erratic or sane?

Anything wild

My neighbor has squirrels living in her attic. So she called the expert from Anything Wild. He set traps and comes out everyday. He will ultimately patch the hole where they get in.
The panel of his truck lists numerous animals he eradicates including bats.

I talked with owner Steve from Anything Wild. He pulled a seventy pound beaver from the back of his truck to show off to me. He bragged that his business is recession-proof and that he has clients all over the state as there isn’t much competition. I told him he needed to get rid of some of the party animals on the next block! I just put the Anything Wild magnet on my refrigerator.

What business exists in your town that gets rid of wild animals?

Getting into shape

Yesterday, we went to a Sacred Shape Note Singing group. Shape Note singing is more challenging than other singing. Also, it is done a capella. The sound is beautiful.

What kind of singing do you enjoy?

Night of the rose

Last night we went to the staged performance of Der Rosenkavalier, (Knight of the Rose). The music was extraordinary. Wagner opera’s, even comedies like this, are very long. This three-act opera went well into the night.

What opera do you especially like? Who is your favorite composer?

Marian the librarian

Yesterday, I helped in the grade school library. I totally enjoyed the day. The school librarian has one of the best jobs in the world.

What job can you think of that sounds terrific?

Neighborhood ghosts

After our neighbor died, the house across the street sat empty for a long time.

Then one day, as if by magic, I noticed draperies on the windows and lights on in the evening. None of us ever saw a moving van or anything like it. It is as if people moved in during the nighttime.

What mystery neighbors live near you?

Don't pass over Passover

Pass the seder plate.

Passover is next week and it’s one of my favorite holidays. One of my non-practicing Jewish friends was just given a seder plate. She’s not sure if she’ll use it and is wondering if there are other uses for a seder plate.

Anyone? Nothing disrespectful, please.

Farm girl at heart

I don’t know how I got this way, but I absolutely love power tools and lots of guy stuff. My favorite store is Blain’s Farm and Fleet. I was there yesterday looking at tools and garden supplies. On the way home I noticed a brand new store that just sells tools at discount prices. I stopped there and was wonderfully overwhelmed.

We used to have a store here called Huey’s that bragged about selling 44,444 items. I never counted, but I certainly miss Huey’s.

What is your favorite place to shop?
